About this project in BBA Explorer
Bob Solem of Maryland kindly sent us an electronic copy of the atlas dataset in the summer of 2004. Data are presented here by agreement between the atlas project, NBII, and USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center.
Results should be cited as:
Breeding Bird Atlas Explorer (online resource). 2024. U.S. Geological Survey Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. <Date of access>. http://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bba. Data extracted from: Robbins, Chandler S, senior editor and Erik A. T. Bloom, project coordinator. 1996. Atlas of the Breeding Birds of Maryland and the District of Columbia. Pittsburgh, PA: University of Pittsburgh Press. 479pp.
Use Policy
The data presented herein may be used by anyone for educational purposes. However, if the data are to be reproduced as part of a research project or other publication, including on the internet, the Maryland and D.C. Breeding Bird Atlas must be cited as below. The M.O.S. desires notification about publications making use of their data. These data are not to be used for commercial purposes including resale except by the M.O.S. and their publisher(s). Atlas data are subject to biases that limit their exhaustiveness. Nonetheless, these data provide a valuable source of information on the nesting birds of Maryland and the District of Columbia.
Sponsors
Sponsorship and coordination for this project was provided by the Maryland Ornithological Society and the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.
Treatment of the received dataset

We imported the received dataset with modifications as follows to better combine with other atlases or to match publication cited above:

  • Breeding codes “O” and “X” were mapped separately (i.e., the former as the observed and the latter as possible) in the original publication, but we combined them under the possible category based on the definitions in the field card.

Second atlas: Maryland & DC 2002-2006 (published!)
The currently displayed project is a first breeding bird atlas. For information about the second ("follow-up") atlas, see Maryland & DC 2002-2006 (published!).
