Quality Control filters for Recapture Submissions

Listed below are the quality control filters through which all submitted recaptures records submitted via Bandit are processed. Included is a description of the filter and the information BBL staff are seeking from the bander to verify the record or resolve data quality issues.

The filters are listed alphabetically.

Filter Name Description How to resolve
Archived/lost/destroyed Our records indicate that no banding data exists for this band. The bander who was issued the band reported that the data were lost or the band was destroyed. Please recheck your field sheets or band if it was removed to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Bad Age/Sex Age and/or Sex unlikely on this date per published research. Please provide justification for the age and sex that were assigned to this record or indicate if you would like to modify the record.
Bird Status VS Provisions According to provisions of your permit, you are not authorized to use this status. Please verify that the bird status is correct. If it is, please contact the appropriate BBL staff person to request the relevant provision be added to your permit.
Dup Enc Duplicate record based on band number, date, and capture time. Please verify the details of the encounter so that the duplicate can be removed.
Enc Age VS Banding Age The age of the bird at recapture is in conflict with the age of the bird at original banding. Please review the banding and recapture field sheets to determine what age should be assigned to each. If this is a foreign recapture, please request a copy of the banding details from the BBL if they are not included in the email you received.
Sex Mismatch The sex of the bird at recapture is in conflict with the sex of the bird at original banding or other submitted recapture reports. Please review the banding and recapture field sheets to determine what sex should be assigned to each. If this is a foreign recapture, please request a copy of the banding details from the BBL if they are not included in the email you received.
How VS Pres Cond The how obtained code selected is in conflict with the present condition of the bird at recapture. Please review the details of the recapture record for the how obtained and present condition. How obtained codes that indicate a bird died cannot have a present condition that the bird is alive and vice versa.
How vs Status The how obtained code selected is in conflict with the status of the bird at original banding. Please indicate if the bird was identified via an auxiliary marker instead of the Federal band.
In captivity, re-enc There is a previous encounter report that indicates this bird was placed in captivity. Please verify the details. If you are aware of the date and location the bird was released from captivity, please include this in your response.
In Mail Room Band Span status indicates band has not yet been issued. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Incoming Schedule The banding data have been received but are still undergoing review. No action needs to be taken.
Invalid Age The age provided is not a valid value. Please provide a valid age value. For valid codes click here.
Invalid Band # The band number is not a valid band number. Please provide a valid band number for the record.
Invalid Bird Status The bird status is not a valid value. Please provide a valid bird status. For valid codes click here.
Invalid Contact Info The permit number does not occur in our database. Please provide your correct Master permit number that was assigned to you by the BBL.
Invalid Enc Date The date is not a valid value (e.g. Feb. 29 in a non-leap year). Please provide a valid date that the bird was recaptured.
Invalid How Aged The how aged code provided is not a valid value. Please provide a valid how aged code. For valid codes click here.

Invalid Species The species code provided is not a valid value. Please provide a valid species code. For valid codes click here.
Mortality prefix Prefix 99?9 can not be encountered, this is not a band that was ever issued. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
No Bndg in Database The band number provided has never been used in the BBL database. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Not Acknowledged Band was issued but its receipt was never acknowledged. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Obt Before Banded The date precedes the original banding date. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number and verify the recapture date. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Ordered Band This band has been ordered by a bander but we have not received any data. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Previous Terminal Enc An encounter record was submitted with an earlier date that indicates the bird was dead and/or the band removed. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Record with remarks The record has something in the remarks. No action is required unless a request for clarification is indicated in the email from the BBL.
Region VS Provisions The region (state/province/country) where the bird was banded is not authorized on your permit. Please verify the recapture location. If it is accurate, please contact the appropriate BBL staff to request the relevant state/province/country get added to your permit.
Replaced Band? Bird reported released alive without a band. If the band was replaced, please submit the replacement on the new banding record and submit via Bandit. If the band was not replaced, please indicate this in your response.
Reward Band # Mismatch The reported reward band does not match according to our database or no reward band was reported and the bird should have one. Please recheck your field sheets to see if the reward band number is recorded correctly or was not included in your Bandit submission. Bandit versions 3.01 and lower have a bug where the reward band is not included in the submission file; it must be emailed to us with the corresponding Federal band number.
Same Day Recapture Duplicate record based on band number, recapture date or banding date. If the bird was captured multiple times on the same date, each record must have a unique recapture time. If the bird was captured only once on the date, we need to know the accurate details so that the duplicate can be removed.
Schedule in File A banding record does not exist in the database but may be on a paper banding data sheet in storage. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Species Mismatch The species on the recapture record does not match the banding record. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number and the species that was recorded. Please also consider that the band may have been misread or the bird misidentified.
Species VS Date It is unusual for the species to be in the state/province/country on the reported date. Please verify the species, date, and location.

Too Old, See Biologist The bird and/or band are unusually old. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Trap After Dead The bird was reported dead preceding a record indicating the bird was recaptured alive. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Undefined Location Location is not found in bander's locations table. Please recheck the location id assigned to the record in Bandit to ensure it is a value included in your Bandit location table.
Unused Band Band Span status indicates band is unused. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Unusual Migration Compared to other encounter records for the species, the movement of this bird from the original banding location looks unusual. Please recheck your field sheets or the band, if it was removed, to verify the number and the reported location. Please also consider that the band may have been misread.
Unverified Location The location has not yet been verified in the bander's locations table. No action is required unless a request for clarification is indicated in the email from the BBL.
Up for Banding The banding data have not yet been received. No action is required unless a request for clarification is indicated in the email from the BBL.
Victim, See Biologist The bird was reported as shot but is a non-game or typically non-hunted species. Please recheck the how obtained code assigned to this record.
