Non-Migratory Populations

Nonmigratory Cranes
A group of young chicks are socialized together before their transfer to the Louisiana non-migratory population.

The USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center also raises chicks for release into a newly established non-migratory flock in the wetlands of Southwest Louisiana. In early winter, the chicks are flown to White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area and experience a "soft release" where they are placed in a predator-proof pen with no net cover and are slowly acclimated to their new surroundings.  They live in Louisiana year-round and do not migrate.
