What is the BBS and why is it important? The
BBS is a long-term, continental avian monitoring program designed
to track the status and trends of North American birds. It was initiated
in 1966 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and is now jointly
coordinated by the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and Canadian
Wildlife Service's National Wildlife Research Centre.
BBS data provide an index of population abundance that can be used to estimate population trends and relative abundances at various geographic scales. The BBS database contains data on over 650 bird species and provides trend estimates for > 420 species. |
