Report Method Codes

These codes describe the method used to report a band and, in some cases, who took the initiative in reporting a band. They are especially useful in the analysis of game bird banding data. Unless stated otherwiese, the codes in current use were utilized starting September 1, 1971.

00 Unknown
01 *This code was discontinued on March 30, 2010.* Paper report that was received via mail or e-mail (e-mails are printed and filed with regular mail reports). The band number was reported by or as a result of the initiative of the person who found the band, their family, or a personal acquaintance. Report Method 01 is used if a conservation agent reports a band at the finder's request by mail or e-mail.

*This code was discontinued on December 1, 1999* The band number was reported by or as a result of the initiative of someone other than the hunter or finder, their family, or a personal acquaintance. Why Reported 02 is used if a person who both finds and reports a band indicates that they are reporting it at the direction of someone other than their family, or a personal acquaintance. For example, 02 would be used if an official conservation agency employee or bander told them to report it.
06 *This code was discontinued on March 30, 2010.* Reported on the 1-800 telephone number. This code was added September 1, 1995 to keep track of bands reported on the new 1-800-327-BAND telephone line.
07 Reported on the Internet through our web-reporting page (www.reportband.gov). This code was added December 1, 1999 to keep track of bands reported on the Internet.
11 Paper, postal mail.  This code was added March 30, 2010 to better track band reports sent via postal mail.  These reports were previously coded as 01: Paper.
12 Email (other than from color marker reports).  This code was added March 30, 2010 to better track band reports that are sent via email.  These reports were previously coded as 01: Paper.
13 Electronic color marker report.  This code was added March 30, 2010 to better track auxiliary marker reports submitted via the BBL color marker reporting website.  These reports were previously coded as 01: Paper.
14 Bandit, Band Manager, or paper banding schedule.  This code was added March 30, 2010 to better track band reports submitted via the same methods for submitting banding data.  These include, but are not limited to, recaptures, replaced bandings, and birds given an additional band at recapture.  These reports were previously coded as 01: Paper.
15 Bander Portal.  This code was added January 9, 2023 to better track band reports submitted via Bander Portal.
61 1-800 report, call center.  This code was added March 30, 2010 to track band reports submitted via the contracted call center on the 1-800-327-BAND line.  Existing reports were updated with this code if there was record that they were submitted via the call center.  These reports were previously coded as 06: Reported on the 1-800 telephone number. 
62 1-800 report, USGSBBL.  This code was added March 30, 2010 to track reports submitted at the USGSBBL (United States Geological Survey Bird Banding Laboratory) from the 1-800-327-BAND line.  Existing reports were updated with this code if there was record that they were submitted at the USGSBBL via this line.  These reports were previously coded as 06: Reported on the 1-800 telephone number.
63 1-800 report, CWSBBO.  This code was added March 30, 2010 to track reports submitted at the CWSBBO (Canada Wildlife Service Bird Banding Office) from the 1-800-327-BAND line.  Existing reports were updated with this code if there was record that they were submitted at the CWSBBO via this line.  These reports were previously coded as 06: Reported on the 1-800 telephone number.
64 1-800 report, Mexico toll free line.  This code was added March 30, 2010 to track reports submitted at the USGSBBL from the Mexico 1-800-327-BAND line.  Existing reports were updated with this code if there was record that they were submitted at the USGSBBL via this line.  These reports were previously coded as 06: Reported on the 1-800 telephone number.
65 Phone, color marker report.  This code was added March 30, 2010 to better track auxiliary marker reports submitted at the USGSBBL or CWSBBO via 1-800-327-BAND or through individual phone lines.  These reports were previously coded as 01: Paper.
72 CWSBBO email.  This code was added May 12, 2020 to better track reports with known band number sent via email to CWSBBO.
73 1-800 report, CWSBBO (added via Internet).  This code was added May 12, 2020.
74 CWSBBO email - color marker.  This code was added May 12, 2020 to better track auxiliary marked bird reports (band number is unknown or not reported) sent via email to CWSBBO.
75 1-800 report, CWSBBO - color marker.  This code was added May 12, 2020.
