| | Title | Population dynamics of Canada Geese within the Atlantic Flyway |
| | Project Description | The distribution of Canada geese (Branta canadensis) has changed dramatically over the last 45 |
| | years. Overall the migrant population has declined to the point where the hunting season has been |
| | closed, whereas resident geese are so prevalent that they are considered nuisances in many |
| | places. In order to study the dynamics of these two sub-populations both migrant and resident |
| | geese were neck-collared by biologists in the Atlantic Flyway from 1990 to 1997. Observers have |
| | conducted intensive searches for collared geese over this same period. This project will consist of |
| | analyzing these mark/resight data, to (1) determine if resident geese migrate and the timing of |
| | migration if they do; (2) estimate survival and movement rates over harvest and non-harvest |
| | periods, and their relationship to harvest regulations, for residents and migrants; (3) estimate |
| | retention rates of experimental rubber neck bands that were used. |
