| | Project Description | The Virginia Tech Cooperative Park Studies Unit (CPSU) was established in 1989 by the National |
| | Park Service, Mid-Atlantic Region, in the Department of Forestry, College of Forestry and Wildlife |
| | Resources, Blacksburg, VA. The field station is now administered by the U.S. Geological Survey |
| | Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Field station staff and affiliates conduct a variety of research, |
| | inventory and monitoring, technical assistance, and information and technology transfer activities |
| | serving the National Park Service and other federal and state land management agencies. To date, |
| | 44 natural and social science studies totaling approximately 1.7 million dollars have been |
| | contracted to station and University scientists. A primary emphasis of the field station is visitor |
| | impact research in protected areas and associated assistance to managers in evaluating and |
| | managing recreation-related environmental impacts. This work is conducted by the stations Visitor |
| | Impact Research and Technical Assistance program. |
