| | Title | Technical assistance to U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Region 1: Mariana Archipelago |
| | Rescue and Survey (MARS) |
| | Project Description | We know from the natural histories of Hawaii and Guam that extinction rates climb when man |
| | enters an island environment. The introduction of brown tree snakes on Guam has been especially |
| | devastating on the avifauna of that island. The spread of the brown tree snake to other islands is a |
| | real possibility. This project was funded with several goals, including the documentation of the |
| | historic avifauna on the island of Rota in the Northern Mariana Islands group. The second goal is |
| | to identify those species unique to the island and assess their ability to be successfully brought |
| | into captivity for potential breeding programs should this become necessary. To do so we have |
| | over the last several years brought birds of three species into captivity, and, in one case, |
| | successfully returned birds to the wild.Additional goals are to assist the various projects in the |
| | Hawaiian Islands and elsewhere in the Pacific with veterinary support for research projects, |
| | translocations of endangerd species, etc. In addition, the PI will continue to serve on the Hawaiian |
| | Forest Bird Recovery Team disease advisory group. |
