| | Title | Effects of PCBs on reproduction and biomarker responses in Tree swallows at |
| | contaminated sites in the Eastern Region |
| | Project Description | Most of the studies of the harmful effects of PCBs on birds have involved piscivorus or other high |
| | level predators. Little has been done to evaluate other species, at inland sites, as to whether they |
| | are harmed by PCBs or whether they could serve as sentinel species for PCBs at small suspect |
| | sites. Techniques and information are needed to enable resource managers to evaluate potential |
| | harm to wildlife at relatively small inland sites contaminated with PCBs. We are studying the |
| | effects of environmental exposure to PCBs on reproduction and a variety of biochemical and |
| | biological systems in order to determine whether there is harm to the birds and to develop and |
| | field validate biomarkers for PCB exposure. A document directed to resource managers will be |
| | prepared based on this study alone or jointly on this study and the related mammalian study |
| | (5001827). |
