| | Title | Restoration ecology of a migratory flock of whooping cranes |
| | Project Description | The project will develop new techniques for reintroducing migratory cranes. It should result in a |
| | clear evaluation of the practicality and reliability of leading cranes on migration using motorized |
| | vehicles. Other techniques tested will be adopting chicks and juvenile cranes onto guide birds, a |
| | stage-by-stage migration technique wherein cranes are moved to stopover areas rather than |
| | following a motorized vehicle. Finally, the best techniques will be adapted for use on an actual |
| | whooping crane reintroduction beginning 2001. Some effort will also go to making information from |
| | each subproject available in the classroom, on the Internet, and in books and scientific articles. |
| | From the whole process we will know the practicality of different methods for introducing cranes. |
| | The results will go far in providing techniques to restore wildlife populations of many decimated |
| | taxa (especially birds). |
