| | Project Description | Technical advice is provided to national parks on surveillance and management of mosquitoes and |
| | West Nile Virus. This includes writing mosquito/WNV surveillance and management protocols for |
| | selected parks, including Fire Island National Seashore and Gateway National Recreation Area in |
| | New York, the National Capital Region parks in the Washington D.C. area, and revieweing and |
| | updationg the protocols at other parks (including Delaware Water Gap NRA and Assateague |
| | Island NS). These plans are coordinated with local health departments and mosquito management |
| | agencies, and with the CDC where appropriate. Surveillance data are reviewed during the |
| | mosquito season and technical advice is given on appropriate responses to various surveillance |
| | results. Consultation is at the park, regional and national levels. A survey of mosquitoes, mosquito |
| | habitats, and arboviruses (Determine the distribution of mosquito species associated with West |
| | Nile Encephalitis and survey potential breeding habitat in NPS units in the Northeast and National |
| | Capital Regions) is currently underway as a cooperative effort with the University of Rhode Island |
| | (R. LeBrun, P.I.), University of Maryland, Eastern Shore (J. Singleton), National Park Service and |
| | U.S. Geological Survey. A total of 16 National Park sites from Maine (Acadia NP) to Virginia |
| | (Richmond NBP) are being sampled. |
