| | Title | Demographic Modeling of North Pacific Albatross Populations |
| | Project Description | Breeding populations of Black-footed (Diomedea nigripes) and Laysan (Diomedea immutabilis) |
| | albatross have experienced significant declines. These species face significant threats from |
| | commercial longline fisheries; thousands are killed annually. Long-term banding data exist |
| | (>170,000 records in an inefficient database and another 100,000 historic records on paper). |
| | However, these data are not currently organized for the demographic analyses possible with |
| | contemporary analytical models. These data could provide long-term, comparative estimates of |
| | survival and population trends essential for management. The first need is a readily accessible, |
| | functional database of all albatross banding data. These data can then be analyzed and a model |
| | developed to estimate survival rates and related demographic parameters. This will assist in |
| | population management and help to effectively interpret bycatch mortality information for these |
| | declining species. Objectives are to: (1) Develop a database of bandings and re-sightings of |
| | Black-footed and Laysan albatross in the North Pacific; (2) Develop a demographic model for |
| | albatross populations from historic mark-recapture data that involves estimating survival, |
| | movement, breeding proportions, and growth rates, and relate them to longline fisheries pressure. |
| | Keywords | albatross, breeding probability, bycatch, capture-recapture, population dynamics, survival, |
