USGS contributions to FWS aquatic resource protection and

management in the Southeast

FWS relies heavily on research and technical assistance provided by PWRC, in cooperation

with other USGS personnel and partners, to manage rare aquatic resources. Recent FWS and

PWRC collaborations in the Southeast include development of the Etowah River Regional

Habitat Conservation Plan to protect and recover three listed and four imperiled fish species; an

evalution of water availability for ecological needs using the Flint River, Georgia, as a pilot

study; development of non-biased methods to estimate abundance and distribution of fish

species with low capture probability; a prioritized GIS inventory of culverts, dams, and other

impediments to fish passage in priority Coosa River basin watersheds; and evaluation of the

effects of proposed drinking water reservoir options and flow regimes on fish communities and
