U.S. Department of the Interior, U.S. Geological Survey,
USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center's FY 2006
Biennial Science Meeting
Please Note: This meeting was originally scheduled for February 14-16, 2006, but due to a major snowstorm that caused power outages at Patuxent, the meeting had to be cancelled and has been rescheduled for October 11 - 13, 2006
Date: October 11 - 13, 2006
Location: National Wildlife Visitor Center, USFWS Patuxent Research Refuge (directions)
Participants: USGS Patuxent scientists, scientific collaborators, and Federal/State/local natural resource manager partners
Purpose: This meeting provides Patuxent a forum for its scientists and partners to report on current and/or completed research studies and to begin the groundwork for future projects. Patuxent conducts research studies of international scope on the effects of ecological processes and human impacts on biological resources and the restoration and maintenance of sustainable ecological systems. Patuxent develops and manages national inventory and monitoring programs and is responsible for the North American Bird Banding Program and leadership of other national monitoring programs such as the Breeding Bird Survey. Patuxent's scientific and technical assistance publications, wildlife databases and electronic media are used nationally and worldwide in managing biological resources.
Benefits: Participants will get a better understanding of USGS Patuxent's current scientific work and capabilities and the science information needs of partners, and will consider emerging scientific issues of concern to resource managers.
Dedication: This meeting is a special tribute to the 60 years of service to the Federal Government by Dr. Chandler S. Robbins. His career at Patuxent has been characterized by outstanding professional accomplishments and outreach, an unswerving devotion to bird conservation and management, and development of unique citizen-science-based surveys and research to address the most profound problems in bird conservation. A special session, focusing on Chan’s scientific contributions is part of this year’s agenda.
Registration: All participants need to register electronically. Details for meals and other choices are included on the registration form. Registration closes September 25, 2006.
Lodging: A block of rooms have been reserved under the name USGS PWRC Annual Meeting at the Bowie Comfort Inn and Conference Center, 4500 Crain Highway, Bowie, Maryland 20716. Registrants will be expected to make their own reservations. Call 301-464-0089 by September 10, 2006 to reserve a room. Poster Sessions: Incorporated within the Agenda, we have provided an opportunity for posters and exhibits by both Patuxent staff and our invited partners. There will be three poster sessions. The sessions will follow the themes for the day in the agenda. Posters and Exhibits should all be registered through this website, even if they were registered for the February dates.
