Water Resources Staff on Estuarine Nutrient Enrichment Highlighted
on Maine's News Program, "Maine Things Considered"
Maine Public Radio featured Patuxent Wildlife Research Center studies of estuarine nutrient enrichment in a series on Research in Acadia National Park. The piece aired on Monday, August 26, during Maine's news program, Maine Things Considered. The story described the causes and consequences of excessive nutrient loading, highlighting USGS integrated research currently underway by Hilary Neckles, Glenn Guntenspergen, and Blaine Kopp from Patuxent in collaboration with Martha Nielsen and Charles Culbertson from the Water Resources Discipline's Maine District Office. The story is available on the Maine Things Considered web site, http://www.mainepublicradio.org/mainethings/ (locate by date of broadcast or search the audio archives for "estuaries".) Topics included: "Physiological Characteristics as Indicators of Whitetail Deer Herd Conditions and Habitat Quality", "Responsible Deer Management Schemes and their Influence on Avian Neotropical Migrants and Other Wildlife Species", and "Ethics in Hunting: Are you a Hunter and a Sportsperson, or just a Killer". Mr. Seginak will also be leading field trips from Madison County High School to his farm, where students will see first hand different habitat management efforts, and how they have affected the overall habitat of the area. This is the 8th year Mr. Seginak has been requested to speak. Contact John Seginak 706-542-1233. |
O'Connell Attends 9th International Grouse Symposium in Beijing China and Presents Paper entitled "Evaluating the Genetic Variability of a Small, Island Population of Spruce Grouse" USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center Scientist Dr. Allan O'Connell attended the 9th International Grouse Symposium held in Beijing, China on August 18th - August 23rd. Dr O'Connell presented a paper entitled, Evaluating the Genetic Variability of a Small, Island Population of Spruce Grouse. The International Grouse Symposium is held every three years and is sponsored by the IUCN Specialist Group for Grouse and the World Pheasant Association. Dr. O'Connell has been working on spruce grouse located within and adjacent to Acadia National Park along the coast of Maine for nearly 10 years. The grouse population is small and breeding habitat is highly fragmented. Using microsatellite markers, he and colleagues at the University of Maine, University of New Brunswick and the Jackson Laboratory, are comparing genetic variability between the Maine population and Canadian population.
