About Northeast Herpetofauna

The Northeast region has 87 species of amphibians and 70 species of reptiles. Of these species, four are endemic (found only within the Northeast region). These four species are the Big Levels salamander (Plethodon sherando), Cheat Mountain salamander (Plethodon nettingi), Shenandoah Mountain salamander (Plethodon virginia) and Shenandoah salamander (Plethodon shenandoah).
