Waterbird Conservation Plans

Numerous individuals have contributed their time and expertise in amassing information and crafting recommendations for waterbird conservation in the Intermountain West. Input into planning updates and participation in the implementation of plans by any stakeholder is welcome.

Cover of BC Yukon Plan

Canadian portion of the region: The Canadian Wildlife Service, Pacific and Yukon Region has prepared a compendium report of Migratory Bird Conservation Plans for the province of British Columbia and the Yukon territory. These plans include the "Pacific & Yukon Region Seabird Conservation Plan" and the "Pacific & Yukon Region Waterbird conservation Plan." They are intended to be internal documents identifying Canadian Wildlife Service/Environment Canada regional priorities. Interested parties can request copies from:

U.S. portion of the region: The Intermountain West Waterbird Conservation Plan (IWWCP) addresses populations, habitats, and conservation strategies for the U.S. portion of the region. The purpose of the IWWCP is to fill knowledge gaps and aid in all-bird conservation efforts of the Intermountain West Joint Venture, 11 States, and other entities associated with the geographic scope of the IWWCP.

Implementation and Resources

Implementation of the above plans is a responsibility of the numerous partners that contributed to their creation. These partners form the Intermountain West Waterbird Working Group, an informal association of biologists, wildlife managers and interested citizens. This working group will communicate and collaborate through a variety of existing entities and individuals:
