Since its formation in 1994, the Pacific Northwest Amphibian and Reptile Consortium (PNARC), an ad hoc committee of the Society for Northwestern Vertebrate Biology, has been actively involved in the development of training programs and other materials designed to assist people with surveying and monitoring amphibians and reptiles in the Pacific Northwest (United States and Canada). Recent products include publication of Northwest Fauna 3, Kelly R. McAllister, 1995, Distribution of amphibians and reptiles in Washington State (an atlas of Washington herps) and several training workshops on amphibian identification and survey methods. Currently, PNARC is preparing to publish Northwest Fauna 4, Sampling amphibians in lentic habitats [edited by D. H Olson, W. P. Leonard and R. B Bury. Northwest Fauna 4 provides guidance on both inventorying and monitoring pond-breeding amphibians in the Pacific Northwest. It contains six chapters that present 1) information on site selection, 2) standardized methodologies for using a visual encounter surveys and aquatic funnel trapping, and 3) two examples (case studies) of amphibian monitoring programs in the Pacific Northwest.
Contributing authors include Mike Adams, Bruce Bury, Charlotte Corkran, Charles Crisafulli, Gary Fellers, Klaus Richter, William Leonard, Don Major, Deanna Olson, and Chris Thoms.
In mid-November 1996, the draft monograph was sent to twenty persons requesting their review, prior to final editing and printing in early 1997. The handbook will be available in March 1997. Orders for Northwest Fauna 4 (and other SNVB publications), and requests for membership SNVB/PNARC applications should be sent to the Society for Northwestern Vertebrate Biology, 4820 Yelm Highway SE, Suite B 175, Olympia, Washington 98503 USA. The price for the handbook is expected to be approximately $15.00 (US).
