In order to make this support possible, the Friends generates funds through seeking corporate sponsorship, an annual wildlife art show, and by operating a book store and interpreted tram ride at the Visitor Center.

The Friends of Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, Inc. is a non-profit organization interested in supporting the mission and programs of the Patuxent Research Refuge and the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center. Among the accomplishments of the Friends:
- Assistance in facilitating the procurement of appropriated funds for the construction of the National Wildlife Visitor Center (located at Patuxent);
- Facilitating the construction of a new Veterinary Hospital to support research programs;
- Facilitating several research projects funded by outside sources;
- Providing support for environmental education activities;
- Awarding prizes to the Maryland Junior Duck Stamp Design Competition winners;
- Enlisting financial and technical support for many Refuge and Center special events through a variety of community contacts
