North American Breeding Bird Survey Logo Welcome to the North American Breeding Bird Survey Coordinators' web site

In 1966, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service initiated the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) to monitor bird populations across the continental U.S. and Canada. The BBS is jointly coordinated by the USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and Canadian Wildlife Service and is active in 49 states and all Canadian provinces with more than 2200 skilled observers participating in the program each year.

The BBS has accumulated over 35 years of data on the abundance, distribution, and trends for more than 400 bird species. These data permit the analysis of population trends and mapping of relative abundance and trends at various geographic scales. These data are widely used by researchers, federal and state governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the general public for various management, research, and educational purposes.
