Advisory for Power Mac version of Band Manager |
![]() |
The following text was e-mailed to everyone who had requested a Power Mac version of Band Manager and had provided us with their e-mail address. A letter with the same text was mailed to all others who had requested the Power Mac version of Band Manager.
Dear Bander,
We are sending you this advisory on the recently
released Power Mac version of BAND MANAGER, because it has come to our
attention that some users have experienced major problems with their systems
after installing BAND MANAGER. In extreme cases, some had to rebuild their
hard drives or reinstall their Operating Systems. This was not predictable
based on the testing that was done prior to the release. Although there were
bugs to be worked out during the Beta testing, none of us experienced anything
like what has happened to some Macintosh users. Other Mac users are using BAND
MANAGER without apparent problems. Nonetheless, we apologize to those Mac users
who experienced serious problems with BAND MANAGER. It appears that the problem
may be related to systems running Mac OS 8.0 and higher that already have
Microsoft products installed on them, but we have not heard from anyone using
Mac OS 7.6.1, so, we cannot guarantee that they won't experience the same
problem. The problem appears to affect files in the system folder. We would
welcome any assistance that those of you who have Mac expertise could provide in
trying to track down the source of the problem. Contact
judy_hildenbrand@usgs.gov (301-497-5824) if you can help, or if you need help
with the Mac version of BAND MANAGER. We are exploring all possibilities to
resolve this issue and will keep you informed as to any decisions that we make
regarding the Mac version of BAND MANAGER. In the interim, we recommend that,
unless you are comfortable with trying to diagnose a potentially catastrophic
failure that may occur on your system after installation of BAND MANAGER, you
do not install it on your Mac at this time.
Sincerely,
John Tautin, Chief
Bird Banding Laboratory
