Shenandoah National Park Project Goals

Evaluate precision, bias, and efficiency of several sampling methods for amphibians.
Conduct validation studies to determine the relationship between capture indices and adjusted population estimates using capture-recapture.
Implement park-wide monitoring programs that provide pilot data on spatial and temporal variation in population size of amphibians.
Assess spatial and temporal variation or changes in amphibian populations in relation to environmental variables.
Document contaminant levels in the redback salamander (Plethodon cinereus) along an elevational gradient.
Establish monitoring program for the endangered Shenandoah salamander (Plethodon shenandoah) and provide population genetics information on this species to the Park.
