Canyon Treefrog (Hyla arenicolor) |
The canyon treefrog, plump and warty with a toadlike appearance, is brownish-gray, often tinted pink. The concealed surfaces of the hind limbs are orange-yellow in color. A dark-edged light spot or bar is present beneath the eye. The canyon treefrog has long toes, tipped with bulbous toe pads. The male has a gray or black throat. Total length ranges between 3.18 - 5.08 cm (1.25 - 2 in). They are found near streams and pools in rock canyons, and can be found under boulders, along stream banks, and sometimes in trees. They breed from April through July in rocky-bound pools in canyon bottoms.
Call: A loud, explosive series of short nasal hollow-sounding notes of the same tone lasting from 0.5 - 3 seconds. The call sounds like brrurt-brrurt-brrurt, like a rivet gun coming from inside a tin can.
