Fowler's Toad (Bufo woodhousii fowleri)

The Fowler's toad is brown, olive, or gray in color with dark spots and a middorsal light stripe.   They range in snout-vent length from 5 - 8.2 cm (2 - 3.25 in).  Usually there are three or more warts in each of the largest dark spots, which distinguishes it from the Eastern American toad which only has one to two warts per spot.  The parotoid glands touch the cranial ridge behind the eyes.  The belly and chest are whitish, but some individuals have a single dark breast spot.  Males have black throats and are smaller than females.  They breed from late April to mid August.  They lay 2,000 - 8,000 eggs in strings attached to vegetation.  Eggs hatch in approximately one week and the tadpole stage lasts one to two months.

Call:  A loud, short nasal bleat (w-a-a-a-h) lasting one to four seconds.
