USGS
Instructions for the NAAMP Calling Survey Data Entry System

While we endeavor to make these pages equally functional across all browsers, they work and look the best in the latest version of Internet Explorer. (This is by no means an endorsement of this product or its manufacturer, just something we've noticed). Please note though that these pages function just fine in latest version of Netscape.

At present, in order to access these pages, your browser must be set to accept cookies. This is the default setting for both Internet Explorer and Netscape, so unless cookies were deliberately disabled on your browser, you need do nothing. If you find you keep being bumped back to the Log In page, it's probably because your browser is set to disallow cookies.

How to enable cookies (Select Help/About (browser name) to determine your browser version):
  • Internet Explorer 6.0: On the Tools/Internet Options.../Privacy tab, any selection from Medium High on down will work.
  • Netscape 6.x: Under Edit/Preferences.../Privacy and Security/Cookies select either "Enable cookies for the originating web site only " or "Accept all cookies".
  • Internet Explorer 5.x: On the Tools/Internet Options/Security tab, select the "Medium" or "Default" security settings (or under Custom Level... enable both the Cookie options).
  • Netscape 4.x: Under Edit/Preferences.../Advanced/Cookies, select either "Accept all cookies" or "Enable cookies for the originating web site only".
We also recommend (but do not require) using browser defaults that enable JavaScript, as this site validates form fields using this language.

Step 1--Logging in:

Data Field Format Example
Route Number A valid route number
Observer Number A valid observer number
Survey Date mm/dd/yyyy 04/04/2000
Run Numer # 1

You will receive an error message if:

  • You mistyped your Observer ID number (or Observer ID not found for other reasons),
  • You mistype the route number (or route number not found for other reasons),
  • You haven't been assigned to the route you typed in for the survey year reflected by the survey date entered (by your state/regional coordinator through the webpage designed for that purpose), or
  • Data has already been entered for that route for that survey date or run number for that survey year.

Step 2--Entering data:

Route Information: Summary information on the route entered is displayed in the first section, along with the survey date and run number entered.

Observer Information (edit as needed):  Observer contact information is displayed in editable text boxes. Update as needed. List only one e-mail. State/regional coordinator will automatically be notified of changes to this information.

Run Information:

Data Field Format Example
Start/End Time
Using MILITARY time--the 24 hour clock running from 00:00 to 23:59.  E.g., 8:00 p.m. is 12 + 8 = 20:00 on military time. NOTE: End times that after 23:59 (00:00 and later) will be assigned the next day's date.  Surveys should be completed by 01:00.
hh:mm
(must use colon)
18:30
Wind
See explanation of codes below.  With the exceptions of Great Plains states, survey
should not be run under Wind Code conditions > 3.  Great Plains should be <= 4.
Select
appropriate
radio button.
1
Sky
See explanation of codes below.
Survey should not be run under Sky Code conditions > 7.
Select
appropriate
radio button.
2
(Optional) Number of days since last rainfall
Required field for Gulf States.

Beaufort Wind speed codes:
Beaufort Number Indicators of Wind Speed Wind Speed (mph)
0 Calm.  Smoke rises vertically. < 1
1 Light air.  Wind direction shown by smoke drift; weather vane inactive. 1-3
2 Light breeze.  Wind felt on face; leaves rustle. 4-7
3 Gentle breeze.  Leaves and small twigs in constant motion; light flag extended. 8-12
4 Moderate breeze (13-18 mph); wind moves thin branches; raises loose paper
(Unless in Great Plains, survey should not be conducted)
13 - 18
5 Fresh breeze (19-24 mph); tresses sway (Do not conduct survey in all regions) 19 - 24

Sky condition codes:
Code Number Sky Condition
0 Clear or only a few clouds
1 Partly cloudy (scattered) or variable sky
2 Cloudy (broken) or overcast
4 Fog or smoke
5 Drizzle or light rain (not affecting hearing ability)
7 Snow
8 Showers (is affecting hearing ability) Do not conduct survey

Per Stop Information:

Data Field Format Example
(Optional) Start Time
Again, using MILITARY time, and including the colon.
hh:mm 19:07
Air Temperature
Be sure to select either F or C.  For most states, there are minimum
temperature guidelines against which data will be checked.
##.# 65.5
Noise
If state elects the Massachusetts Noise Disturbance Index system,
enter 0-4 (see table below),else check the box if noise interfered
with hearing calls at given stop.

Time Out
If you took a time out (due to noise) at a given stop, check yes.

Skipped Stop
Check if you skipped given stop. Suggestion: put reason in Notes.

Amphibian Calling Index
See table below for explanation. Enter a 1, 2, or 3, depending on
call intensity, if given species (rows) was heard at given stop (columns).
Zero (species not heard) is default, so do nothing in case of absence.
# 1
(Optional) Snow Cover
Enter Y if there was snow at given stop, N if not.  A blank box
indicates observer did not take notice of snow cover at stop.
(This is why we don't just have check boxes--
so we know the difference between missing data and no's.)
Y/N Y
(Optional) Cars
Enter number of cars heard at stop. 0 indicates no cars passed by,
while a blank box indicates observer did not collect data on cars.
Database accepts INTEGER values only (no characters or decimals).
# 6
Notes
Enter any notes you might have taken during the survey.
Indicate stop number if notes were specific to a certain stop.

Massachusetts Noise Disturbance Index:
Index Description of disturbance
0 No appreciable effect (e.g., owl calling)
1 Slightly affecting sampling (e.g., distant traffic, dog barking, car passing)
2 Moderately affecting sampling (e.g., distant traffic, 2-5 cars passing)
3 Seriously affecting sampling (e.g., continuous traffic nearby, 6-10 cars passing)
4 Profoundly affecting sampling (e.g., continuous traffic passing, construction noise)

Amphibian Calling Index:
Index Description of abundance
1 Individuals can be counted; there is space between calls
2 Calls of individuals can be distinguished but there is some overlapping of calls
3 Full chorus; calls are constant, continuous, and overlapping

Once all the summary data have been entered, click the Continue button.
You will then be shown a summary of the data you entered to review before finalizing data entry by sending it on to the database.
If data violated NAAMP protocol in any way, you will be alerted to such at the top of the page.
