Training: BBS Methodology - Description and History [page 3/34]
What is the BBS and why is it important?
Declining population trends act as an early warning system that galvanizes research and conservation action to determine causes for the declines before populations reach critically low levels. For example, BBS data were instrumental in focusing research and management action on neotropical migrants in the late 1980s, and on grassland species in the mid-1990s. These data have been used in more than 270 scientific papers, and are also used by various state and provincial-based programs, such as Breeding Bird Atlases and Natural Heritage Programs.
